Creating a Project Management Course
There is a growing demand within organizations for project managers who can balance the triad of constraints-project scope, schedule, and costs-to deliver what is required, on time and within budget. New Jersey Institute of Technology, in partnership with North Jersey Partners, recognized this and created two free online project management courses tailored to the: (1) Transportation, Logistics and Distribution industry and (2) Healthcare and Life Sciences industry. In addition, since Information Technology (IT) cuts across all industry sectors, a third free online IT course was added. As mentioned above, all three courses are fully available online for the self-learner and in a format for presentation by an instructor in the classroom.
These industries were two of the foci of the North Jersey Partners WIRED grant. In addition, since Information Technology (IT) cuts across all industry sectors, a third FREE online IT course was developed. This Guidance Manual is also relevant to another industry focus of the North Jersey Partners' grant which is Entertainment, Arts, and Retail (EAR). In addition, because this manual has been developed as all encompassing, it is possible the tips it contains can be used to design a project management training course for any number of industry sectors other than those mentioned above.
The new courses are based on project management fundamentals as defined by the Project Management Institute (PMI®). Established in 1969, PMI® is the leading global association for the project management profession and was at the forefront of working with business to create standards that work in the real world. Click on PMI® to learn more.
Because these courses were designed to teach learners about methodologies established by PMI®, participants will be able to apply what they learn to a range of challenges that are encountered by all project managers:
If project management skills are indeed vital to your organization and training is needed, you can use one of these courses as is or tailor them to your audience. In fact, you are encouraged to replace the existing case study (ies) with a new one (s) specific to your industry. You also might consider enlisting the help of a project manager within your industry to help with the creation of a case study that will have relevance to your audience.
You can download the Instructor Manuals and PowerPoint presentations for the TLD and the Healthcare and
Life Science courses. You can modify this material to tailor a Project Management course for your specific industry.
